What makes you different from others agents?

One of the first questions agents are asked when they get into real estate is, "What is your Why?" For several years, I really didn't have a compelling one other than I loved working with people and helping them succeed.  While I think that's okay, I have learned your Why should be something that moves you.  It should be something that is 100% going to happen, or your year is a failure.

I didn't have that Why until my 5-month-old son, Bodhi, got diagnosed with cancer in 2018. By the Grace of God, he was cancer-free by his first birthday, and while our time at MUSC wasn't easy, it really ended up being a blip on our radar.  Since then we have really shifted our entire business and our entire brokerage, which now revolves around our Why, which is raising fund for pediatric cancer research. Truly every decision we make, every deal we close, every client event we host... we do it to raise funds for the research.  And honestly, I think once we made our business about serving and giving back, I truly feel we have only been given more. We give more to our clients, more to our agents, and because of that, we are able to give back more to our Why. I definitely encourage anyone who seems to have hit a plateau in their business or anyone who is struggling in real estate to take a look at their reason for being in business and se if they have a strong enough Why. Odds are, once their Why is compelling enough, they'll see their whole world change for the better almost instantly.

Who is one person that has contributed to your success, and how did they help you?

One-hundred percent, I could not run our brokerage without my husband, Josh. He is the smartest person I know, the biggest cheerleader not just for me but for our team members; he is the organization to my non-stop, on-the-go self. He's a fantastic agent but an even better business partner and leader.

How do you manage work/life balance?

I'm 16 years in, and I am sad to say I am just now learning the right balance.  And what I wish I learned earlier in my career is that it takes the right people in your world to have work/life balance. Starting in this career when I was 20, I kind of felt I had to prove myself to people, and in doing so I worked tremendously too much, I remember a three-month span where I didn't take even one day off of work (as a 21-year-old).  That is not healthy for anyone. As I got older and started a family, my priorities shifted, and not just for my family but for myself as well. It starts with admitting you can't do and be everything to everyone all the time.  The way I started gaining that work/life balance is I make a list of my daily tasks.  Everything from answering emails to posting on social media. And then I circle my top 20%. These are the tasks and duties I love doing and I'm good at doing. Everything else, the 80%, is leveraged out to the next person.  I have found if I stay in my 20%, I am more in line with a work/life balance.

As a CRP 40 Under 40 honoree, what words of wisdom would you share with the next generation of REALTORS®?

Once you know the contracts and your fiduciary duties as an agent, it comes down to how you treat people. No one wants to work with an agent who is difficult just for the sake of being difficult. Charleston is a very small town, and your reputation is everything. Always strive to be a good person, be a good listener, be humble, do the right thing when no one is looking and always put your client first.

Fast Five:
What is one thing you can't live without? Chapstick

Today I am in awe of? Sara Blakely

Theme song of your life? I had to phone a friend for this one... Kanye, "Good Life".

Favorite holiday memory?

My mom would set up a beautiful village every year for Christmas. It started small when I was young, but by the time I came back from college, she ended up having so many villages they took up these massive custom built-ins flanking the fireplace that extended wall to wall. She would fill up every single shelf with the most beautiful display and perfectly arranged house with people, faux snow, trains, ice skating rinks. I'll never forget the beautiful glow of that room.

What is your favorite hobby?

Walking the beach at sunrise and finding unique shells.
